Devil May Cry 3, despite its reputation as a typically unfair game in terms of difficulty level, was loved for the high-quality action it provided. If not being able to master the third game you frustration, you may be happy to learn that in spite of being a challenging one, Devil May Cry 4 is not as cruel as its predecessor. Actually, you get to suit the game to your choice. You can select any of the two major difficulty levels, although if you want to cry like a little girl and thrash your limbs, there are many other game plans available. It is not really tough in the first instance either; but, like we expect from a good Devil May Cry game, it sure is excessive: stylized fast-paced action, amazing fights, and terrific combat techniques and beautiful, substantially touching sequences will keep you hooked, even as they provide for epic-style demon-slaying.
A game featuring the charming yet unbelievably insane Dante is obviously supposed to be on the top, even though the famous antihero of the series does not stand in the spotlight this time. That is not supposed to worry you however, for you still get to play Dante: with an exciting assortment of his weapons and styles, as expected from the game. Instead, one gets to play as a new character Nero who has an impressive array of moves and an elegant fighting style of his own. Nero is an excellently developed character with some very realized and naturalistic attributes. He can brood, stare, be emotionally sensitive, and angry. He is definitely fleshed out from the same stuff that Dante was developed from, but it is a sad fact that his connection is left mostly unexplored. Nevertheless, you will enjoy accompanying Nero through his journey of discovering the truth behind Dante’s murder of the leader of the religious organization (The Order of The Sword) to which he belongs.
There are not many surprises the story has in offing for the regulars, but the cutscenes surely are unlike any other game you could have seen in the way they are realized and beautified. Impossibly clean graphics, the theatrical dialogue and awesome camera work make the game truly breathtaking in several respects without making it cheesy. The game is serious where it needs to be, and still manages to keep the tones light, making for a strong narrative. There undeniably are a few exceptions, but the whole aura of the gorgeous sequences makes it all a marvelous spectacle.
The best part about Nero’s combat is his demonic arm, the devil-bringer: you can pull, grab, pick, slam around and smash enemies in spectacular combos, and even be surprising in your own way. The techniques are smooth, and easy to pull off, and the game as a whole tilts more towards the aggressive rather than the defensive gameplay of Devil May Cry 3. There is a lot of elegant stuff to perform, with the most beautiful scenes being the goriest and blood-slick ones. You can do the killing by the kilogram and still be gleeful about tonnes of it in the end.
The action is romanticized, beautiful, and gory. You will surely find the secret missions to be the most interesting part of the game: which are scattered throughout the storyline and offer a number of move-enhancement missions while giving you full satisfaction of demon killing.
The game is heavy to install, but regardless of the platform on which you play it, the motions are fluid. Both Dante and Nero seem to glide in between all the action, and even the way the gore flies is stylized to look truly beautiful. No matter whether you finish it quickly or fast, you will gawk at the beauty of each level. The sound design, as expected, does not fail in elating the player through the action sequences and the melodramatic ones alike. Though the background score may not be universally appealing, it is not mediocre in the least.
While on one hand, the universal popularity, the online ratings, the fighting experience and Dante himself still remains to be the main reasons why the fourth chapter of the Devil May Cry franchise has turned out to be such a big success again, and the newer features are a cherry on the top, despite minor repetition. It is a great game and the quality of action it delivers cannot be questioned. If you happen to still be hungry after having played the last installment of the game, you will find here what you have been searching for; and if you are a newcomer, this game will suit itself to your tastes like honey on tongue.
