Sennheiser Audiophile Headphone HD 650 Review

Retailing at $499, Sennheiser’s Audiophile Headphone, particularly the HD 650 is met with high expectations. And to top it all, it delivers. The look of the headphones not only adds to the style statement but also, makes it all look all the more detailed. They have a thick headband, which spans a few millimeters. Accompanying that are ear cushions, which make it a luxurious listen. To add to all of that, there is a titanium silver finish that pushes it up the looks ladder even more.

In fact, the HD 650 is certainly huge and thus, is not made for carrying around. It weighs around 9 ounces, which is pretty heavy for a set of headphones. However, somehow the weight does not take anything away from the comfort that they provide. Battery power is high and thus, the delivery is even better.

Building up on the hugeness quotient, is also the fact that these headphones are looking for power. Thus, any music player will not be able to live on with this. Tanks to which these headphones can be considered nearly useless if you want to try them on for on-the-go use. It would be better to use them in surround sound, and try them, instead, on a home theater system.

While trying it on a home theatre one is bound to notice the bass. The bass is heavy and is perfectly in line. However, detailed expositions are hard to come across. However, while using the home theatre system, the sound seems to come from the other side of the room, which just adds to the effect of the overall sound quality.

Now, where the difference creeps in, is the genre of music you are listening. Heavy / hard rock songs seem to fall flat on the floor while country music or any song that would be more acoustic-based seemed more powerful and thus, also more moving. The sound however, remains clean throughout. This can indeed force someone to hear music at a much louder volume, a volume where the other headphones would sound screechy in comparison.

The HD 650 is a brilliant headphone. It has it all – the sound, the looks and the feel. The only problem that may affect you as a user is the kind of music you listen to. If you prefer rock, and to top it you prefer to make it sound realistic, it would be much better to steer clear of these and try on some other pair. With a snug fit and good enough detailing, HD 650 might just be “what is next?”.
