Sennheiser is hardly ever the one that would change something in its range, especially something as standard and widely accepted as the Audiophile series.
The design is more refined. It even sounds more upfront that usual. To top it all the headphones are even more comfortable than usual. The ear cups are made in such a way that the drivers are further away that usual and thus, the sound seems to actually come front than the usual right-into-the-ear headphones. This also places the drivers farther away. To top all of this, the framework of the ear cups is brilliant. The plastic, metallic and micro fiber makes it feel all the more luxurious. To top it, it is not that heavy and weighs just over 330 gram, which is evenly distributed over the entire head. This design, in fact, produces lesser distortion.
The designing of the cables too, is in fact very sophisticated. The Y type cable is covered in cloth and is nearly 10 feet long. The packaging, of this pair is very special as it comes in a beautiful storage case. In addition, every pair is hand assembled in Germany and then sent to other countries according to packaging details.
These high-end headphones, retail at $1400, which in turn is a high amount to ask of you if you are an average music listener. However, for those who are avid listeners and care a lot about the sound that comes in, here is a heads up. This pair works at a different level. They sound more like a home theater system than a pair of headphones. In fact, the sound is very different from any usual headphone. However, this also has its own drawbacks. With the home theater feel, and the distance between the driver and the ear cups, the music seems to come from far away and thus, sounds a little less loud than it actually should. However, the upper side is unmistakable. The pair sound deeper and also provides a sense of depth that adds a totally different component and feel to the music. Because of this, and more, the headphones seem to have a special liking for movie dialogues and the delivery of these, seem even better with their use.
However, it is to be duly noted that it is not that the bass line is heavier or the treble is over the top. The only point this gains on is the fact that it is way clearer than a lot of the other headphones. After all, sound cannot always be about having a heavier bass line or having more sound effects than necessary. The live element seems to be missing in this pair but then, they make up for all of this by great sound quality and it is not as if it has bad or unacceptable bass or treble.
The verdict on this one is that if you want it loud, go for another one. And for those, who love music and have enough money to spend on a pair of headphones, this is the one for you.
